On the orders of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, the Tamil Nadu government has ordered 30 new special courts, so that victims get justice faster and offenders are dealt with quickly.
| Courts | Purpose |
|---|---|
| 26 new special courts | To hear only cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 — to protect women and children and ensure speedy justice |
| 4 new special courts | To hear only cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 — towards a drug-free Tamil Nadu |
At a review meeting on cases pending across the state, the Chief Minister asked for details of the number of cases, their present status and how many more dedicated courts were needed. Based on the review, he directed that trials be speeded up so that those found guilty receive the punishment the law provides, and that immediate steps be taken to set up the required courts in all districts. Tamil Nadu already has 22 special POCSO courts; the new courts will add to them.
The order builds on the government’s anti-drug drive, including the integration of anti-narcotics task forces announced earlier in the CM’s term. Dedicated courts mean these cases no longer wait in the queue behind other matters in regular courts.
