First round of EVM verification completed in five of six vacant Assembly constituencies — Election Commission yet to announce by-election schedule
Preparations for Tamil Nadu Assembly by-elections advanced on June 25, 2026 with the first round of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) verification completed in five of the six constituencies that fell vacant after the new government took office. The verification is a mandatory step in the by-election logistics process.
Six Tamil Nadu Assembly constituencies are without sitting MLAs. CM Vijay won from two seats — Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East — and resigned from Tiruchirappalli East to retain Perambur, creating one vacancy. Five additional seats fell vacant after AIADMK MLAs who had supported the TVK government during the May 13 floor test later resigned and formally joined TVK, triggering by-elections in their constituencies.
The Election Commission of India has not yet announced the formal by-election schedule. However, EVM verification in five constituencies confirms that ground-level preparations are well underway. The by-elections are expected to be a significant political moment — an opportunity for TVK to consolidate its Assembly strength.
