The Tamil Nadu government has more than doubled the annual family income limit for the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, from ₹1.20 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh, bringing many more families under the ₹25-lakh cover announced in August.
The Tamil Nadu government has raised the annual family income ceiling for the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) from ₹1.20 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh, opening the scheme to many more lower- and middle-income families.
| Item | Before | Now |
|---|---|---|
| Annual family income limit | ₹1.20 lakh | ₹2.5 lakh |
| Cover per family per year | ₹5 lakh | ₹25 lakh (announced August 2026) |
| How the cover works | Insurer only | Up to ₹5 lakh cashless through the insurer; the balance from a government corpus |
Treatment up to ₹5 lakh a year is paid cashless through the insurance company at empanelled government and private hospitals. Costlier treatment — such as major surgeries, organ transplants and cancer care — is met from a dedicated corpus maintained by the State, up to ₹25 lakh per family.
The old ₹1.20 lakh limit had stayed in place for years while incomes and treatment costs rose, leaving many working families — daily-wage earners, small traders, drivers — just outside the scheme. The higher ceiling and the larger cover together are among the biggest expansions of public health insurance in the State.
