Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay paid tribute to the Marudhu Brothers — Periya Marudhu and Chinna Marudhu — on their 225th memorial day, Saturday, October 24, 2026.
In his message, the Chief Minister praised the brothers’ valour and sacrifice for the freedom of the motherland and their rule over Sivaganga. He said their commitment to the Jambudweep Proclamation against British rule deserves admiration, and that their story must live on from generation to generation.
The brothers ruled the Sivaganga kingdom in the late 18th century and led one of the earliest organised uprisings against the East India Company. In June 1801 they issued the Jambudweep Proclamation at Tiruchirappalli, calling on all people of the land — across caste and religion — to unite against foreign rule. After the battle of Kalaiyarkoil, the British captured them and hanged them at Tiruppattur on October 24, 1801. Tamil Nadu remembers them every year as symbols of courage and unity.
