To stop omni (private) buses from charging excess fares during Deepavali and to manage holiday traffic, a consultation meeting was held at the State Transport Commissionerate on 29 October 2026. It was chaired by Principal Secretary / Transport Commissioner Siji Thomas Vaidyan, Transport Secretary L. Nirmalraj and MTC Managing Director Dr. V.P. Jayaseelan.

Strict Action on Overcharging

Omni bus operators have already been told not to charge more than the usual fares during festival seasons. Buses found overcharging will be seized, and their permits will face temporary suspension or cancellation. To check this, special flying squads (Enforcement Teams) have been formed in all 12 regions of Tamil Nadu.

Kilambakkam Pick-up Rules

So that people can travel home without traffic jams, omni buses must not stop in front of the Thiruvasantham restaurant near the Kilambakkam bus terminus. That pick-up point must be removed from online booking platforms, and omni buses must pick up passengers only at the bays allotted to them inside the Kilambakkam terminus. Buses stopping outside will face strict action.

Senior police officers, the Kilambakkam terminus district revenue officer, the SETC general manager, online bus-booking platforms (AbhiBus, RedBus, ZingBus, FlixBus, Paytm) and the Tamil Nadu Omni Bus Owners’ Association took part.

How to Complain

If an omni bus charges you more than the usual fare, complain to the Transport Department:
