Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced an increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for state government employees, teachers, and family pensioners — one of his first major financial announcements as Chief Minister. The DA rate was raised by 2 percentage points, from 58% to 60%, effective January 1, 2026.

📊 DA Hike — Key Facts
  • DA raised from 58% to 60% — a 2 percentage point increase
  • Effective date: January 1, 2026
  • Beneficiaries: Approximately 16 lakh government officials, teachers, pensioners and family pensioners
  • Additional annual expenditure: ₹1,230 crore
  • Government committed to allocating required additional funds

CM Vijay's Statement

"The government led by the Chief Minister has assured that it will undertake various welfare measures for the people with public welfare as its priority. Government officials and teachers play an important role in designing and implementing these schemes effectively."

Context

The DA hike came alongside Vijay's announcement that women beneficiaries of the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme — a ₹1,000 monthly assistance programme for women heads of households — would receive their May instalment. These announcements together signal the new government's intent to maintain and expand welfare commitments from day one.

What This Means for Government Workers

A 2% DA increase on a base DA of 58% translates to a meaningful monthly increase for employees at all pay levels. For a government employee drawing a basic pay of ₹30,000, the monthly increase amounts to approximately ₹600. For higher pay grade officers, the benefit is proportionally greater. The ₹1,230 crore annual outgo will be met through existing budgetary allocations, the government stated.
