Asked whether actors Dhanush and Sivakarthikeyan might enter politics, DMK general secretary Durai Murugan said on October 26 that not everyone can become MGR or Joseph Vijay — a rare acknowledgement from a senior opposition leader of the Chief Minister’s place in Tamil Nadu’s history.
One of the most senior leaders of the DMK has put Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in the same league as M.G. Ramachandran. Speaking to reporters at his home in Gandhi Nagar, Katpadi (Vellore district), on the evening of Monday, October 26, 2026, DMK general secretary Durai Murugan was asked about talk that actors Dhanush and Sivakarthikeyan could follow Vijay into politics.
“Not everyone can become MGR or Joseph Vijay.”
“எல்லாரும் எம்.ஜி.ஆர், ஜோசப் விஜய் ஆகிட முடியாது.”
Coming from a leader of the main opposition party, the remark is a plain acknowledgement of what Vijay has achieved. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, founded on February 2, 2024, won the 2026 Assembly election and formed the government within about two years — a journey that Tamil Nadu had not seen since MGR swept to power in 1977, five years after founding his party.
The comparison also says something many in Tamil Nadu already feel: fame on screen opens a door, but it is the bond with the people, built over decades, that wins an election.
Speculation about Dhanush grew after he turned his fan club into a welfare-focused organisation and began meeting its office-bearers. Neither Dhanush nor Sivakarthikeyan has announced any decision to enter politics.
